As a mother of two children and a member of the Design Alley team headed by Award  winning Designer Ronnie Vanstone, I have enjoyed creating beautiful and functional children's spaces for my home, for our clients and for many show suites. Nothing stops a crowd of mothers more than walking through a new home or housing development, then a elegant nursery or a fabulous kids themed bedroom. Let’s take a Peek-a-Boo at this months Peek-a-Room!

Mid century modern is back in a big way with its natural textures and clean lines, it’s a great choice for a baby girl or baby boy’s nursery. This Peek-a-Room nursery is soft, fresh and cute while easy to clean and a lovely warm space to cuddle with your little bundle of joy.

The bed in our Peek-a-Room nursery has a modern feel with out looking to sleek or streamlined. Solid white or two toned white with natural wood will work well for this look. Keep the bedding simple no prints or patterned bedding for a mid century modern look. It’s all about natural textures and clutter less spaces. www.inhabitots.com has a great selection of high quality cribs and non toxic bedding that will work fabulously for your mid century modern Peek-a-Room.

Luxury vinyl plank or LVP flooring is my personal choice for this Peek-a-Room. It comes in hundreds of colours, looks totally natural, is virtually indestructible and super easy to clean. In our Peek-a-Room nursery we have a soft grey tone LVP floor with a slight blue undertone which works well with the contrasting yellow chair and tan / caramel accent colours. Tip: When laying plank flooring remember the rule is run your planks in a straight line from light source to light source or run your planks in the direction with the greatest length.

I love our yellow mid century modern chair in this Peek-a-Room it’s stylish, it rocks and its easy to get in and out of while holding your beautiful sleeping baby. Although my goal with our Peek-a-Room blogs is to help you create your own Peek-a-Room at a budget price I have to stop you right here. Spend some money ... on your nursery rocker or chair. Be comfortable and cozy! Check out www.insperationfurniture.ca you can do some customization and the quality of fabrics and structure truly will make a difference in how much comfort you and baby will have.

“Fake-it” wallpaper is such a clever way to make a statement on the wall (or walls!) of the nursery with thoughtfully placed decals. These geometric patterns look so much like wallpaper that they’ll make you do a double take! Simply paint your Peek-a-Room nursery walls a soft grey and with ruler lines place your removal “Fake-it” stickers. Tip: for a modern and clean look ensure you add some space between your stickers.

There are many great modern ceiling light fixtures available in the market today. Finding the perfect lighting for your Peek-a-Room nursery will be fun with lots of selection and price ranges. Enjoy and remember lighting is the jewel of the space.

Let’s take a Peek-a-Boo at this month's Peek-a-Room!

Some of the most difficult bedrooms to design are for our amazing pre-teen daughters. They have out grown their cute and playful theme rooms but have not yet grown into the edgy urban look that speaks to their own personal taste. This month's Peek-a-Room is a fabulous way to still give your pre-teens some fun and whimsy along with a touch of "Alice in Wonderland" sophistication which can easily be adapted to their changing personalities.

The bed in our Peek-a-Room has a black chalk painted head board with soft curved moulding detail. Chalk painting is an easy way to give an older inexpensive furniture piece a charming vintage look. The nightstand is mirrored and round adding a soft touch of sparkle to the space. If you require two nightstands in your Peek-a-Room make them each unique ... there's no "matchie - matchie" in Wonderland. Tip: Find step by steps chalk painting instructions online.

This Peek-a-Room's bedding, which is done in black, red and white with touches of lavender, is sophisticated and fits perfectly into our Wonderland feel. Using fabrics with a raised brocaded pattern and mixing textures like velvets and silks creates a royal feel for your young Queen of Hearts. Tip: For a more grown up feel make sure one of your through pillows is a bolster and for a bit younger feel change out your bedding to a fun harlequin black & white pattern.

The desk and shelving in our Wonderland Peek-a-Room looks great and can be easily replicated with Ikea pre-made shelves and desk top units, then trimmed with a decorative dental moulding to give you that custom built in look. For the desk chair, anything in black, red or white will work, just keep it soft and either whimsical or sophisticated.

The wall trim mouldings in this Peek-a-Room are beautiful but detailed and may require some custom millwork to achieve. A simpler option is to create a rectangular picture frame moulding design using a more decorative moulding profile. For more of a vintage flare, add pre-made wood rosettes throughout your moulding design.

Our Wonderfland Peek-a-Room's window valance has a fun shape and has been uphostered in an unmatched patterned fabric incorporating our black, white and red colour palette. You can achieve the same look and feel in your Peek-a-Room with a basic uphostered box valance or by adding full length velvet draperies. Tip: for less expensive draperies use Velour or Velveteen.

By just adding a few easy-to-find decor items, you will take your daughter's new Peek-a-Room to "Wonderland". This rich red teapot lamp from Etsy.com is a must-have and the white rabbit chair that I absolutely love is from yankodesign.com. For more of a Wonderland feel add a black & white checkers rug or an imitation Dali "melting clock" on the wall.

There are many different Alice in Wonderland word decals available on line like the one in our Peek-a-Room "We're All Mad Here". Spend a little more time surfing the net and pick the perfect one for your daughter's Peek-a-Room. The whimsical flourishes wall decals can also be found on line, I suggest you purchase a few packages and then use your own creative style to make a design that matches your Wonderland quote and fits your wall space... and don't forget to add a couple of decals on the ceiling above your daughter's bed.

Our Peek-a-Room has a subtle striped wall which can be easily replicated. Choose one paint colour such as our Peek-a-Room's light lavender and have it mixed with two different finishes, Matte and Eggshell, for a softer look, or Eggshell and Satin if you want a bit more dramatic look. Using the two finishes will create a slight sheen on every other stripe and give an illusion of stripes, but really it's just the light bouncing off the two finishes differently. Tip: Do not go any farther than one colour step difference on the finishing chart as it will be much too distracting to the eye and take away from the sophisticated effect you are trying to create.

Let’s take a Peek-a-Boo at this months Peek-a-Room!

If your little guy loves Disney's Cars or wants a car room more than anything else in the world, then just remember it's all about the car bed. You can paint, add fun decals, Disney bedding and even cool new toys but you will never get the WOW factor from your excited youngster without giving him his very own bright red car to snuggle up in each night. You may even find he can't wait to go to bed. It's simply all about the Car bed!

I love this Step 2 red convertible from Sears. This bed size changes from a toddler bed to single bed, includes silvertone rims, realistic decals and even comes with working headlights that have a 15-minute auto shut-off feature. Fits a crib or twin mattress.

The next great thing about our car Peek-a-Room is the fabulous accent coloured wall. Match your furniture and headboard wall colour, it can be a shade lighter than your car or even an accent colour from one of your car's decals. Make it bold and remember to use low VOC paint.

No great car bed can run without gas. This little gas pump from Restoration Hardware will look great in your car Peek-a-Room and your little guy's imagination will run wild. Another fun idea is a chest of drawers painted and decaled to look like a cool tool chest.

Peak a room blog 2-5.png

In this car Peek-a-Room, the large wardrobe can be easily copied with a free standing Ikea wardrobe that is trimmed and painted in your accent colour. To finish it off add a large Disney's Cars decal and for safety attach it to the wall.

The end tables and cute desk are simple box builds with white tops and accent coloured sides and bottom shelves. Tip: You may want to just paint your furniture fronts in your bold accent colour and keep the sides neutral. This will make it easy to change up the room to fit your little guy's next dream room.

The bedding and walls in this car Peek-a-Room are done in a light gray/beige that will easily grow with your child's style and keep this fun bedroom from feeling too overpowering. Add some crazy floor cushions for seating, a neutral area rug, a couple of basic white lamps and then get ready for all the neighbour kids to come over and play.

Peek-a-Room Blog — Elegant Nursery

Let’s take a Peek-a-Boo at this month's Peek-a-Room!

Amazing, elegant, beautiful and soft are all the words one could use to describe this baby's nursery by Restoration Hardware. But we may want to add words like expensive, large space needed, or "my room is missing 10 foot ceilings and oversized windows". Let's see how we can transform this pretty and tranquil nursery to fit your space and budget.

Cribs are the first thing we buy when creating our new nursery and they need to be safe and functional. Once you find the crib you love check out the Health Canada site www.hc-sc.gc.ca to ensure its "product safety approved".

Peak a room blog 1-3.png

Make the crib bedding yourself! Even I can follow a simple quilt and bumper pad pattern. Check out allfreesewing.com for free nursery patterns. Then hit the fabric stores. Look for soft and washable, high quality fabrics in a muted neutral. Add a bit of lace trim to the bed skirt and eco-friendly crisp white crib sheets.

The window coverings really make this room. It doesn't matter if your windows are small or large, full length curtains are a must for this nursery look. Keep them white and simple, make sure they are heavy enough to hold their shape (yet light flowing in look) and hang them above your window frame if needs be. Tip: weights or base sticking helps to keep fold lines straight.

White baby furniture is an easy find, but for this look ensure your change table and storage shelf has legs and is made of a solid wood, not particle board. This will create a more airy feel to your nursery. If you're redoing a fun older furniture piece use low VOC paint products and water base stains and/or lacquers. Add elegant drawer hardware such as a crystal or mirrored knobs to finish off the look.

Peak a room blog 1-4.png

Moms must have a chair, needs to be comfortable and wide enough to enjoy those quiet moments with baby. This Ikea chair with its removable seat cover is an ideal choice. Tip: use a steamer to press chair cover for a crisp finished look.

Match your chair fabric to your curtain fabric to ensure they are the same shade of white. If your chair is right in front of your curtains and the whites don't match I suggest choosing another colour from the room such as the neutral in the bedding for either your chair cover or curtain fabric.

Paint your nursery. Don't make the mistake of picking your paint first; instead, work from your fabric choices and bring out already established colour to give your nursery continuity and flow. In our Peek-a-Room they have chosen a wall colour in the same neutral family as the bedding and added white moldings.

To achieve the soft feel in our Peek-a-Room, add texture. The sculpted white carpet, wicker baskets, white painted metal frames and decor mirror add textural levels to the space that create an airy yet warm and soft feel.

Lastly, light it up with an elegant yet simple chandelier. Pick one that is easy to clean, it doesn't have to be crystal to look great. Walmart and Home Depot have several selections that will work nicely for this look and pricing is reasonable.
